"If she needs the sacrifices to die for her to gain her full strength, why did she fly away without doing anything?" I asked.
"She has two choices," Quinn said. "Either get your support or kill you. I suppose she was hoping for your support. Especially if she could sense your power. Coming from the bloodline of an elite, you're a well of untapped potential."
"Seems risky to me," I said. "Wouldn't it be easier to just take us out?"
"Give her time," Quinn said. "If she hasn't already started to come for the others, she will soon."
With that, I jumped to my feet and looked back at James. "I thought you said she'd bide her time, she'd wait before she did anything."
"I thought she would," he said.
"He was never a great student when we were kids, either," Quinn said.
As much as I wanted to imagine James as a baby dragon and ask Quinn for all the details, there wasn't time. "We have to go find the others. We have to make sure they're safe."
James stood. "You know, when we met, I swear you told me you weren't a hero."
"I'm not a hero," I said. "But that doesn't mean I can't occasionally do the right thing."
"Guilt is a powerful motivator," Quinn said.
"Stop, Quinn, she was played. It could have happened to anyone," James said.
"Marco!" I ignored the bickering dragons and walked down the hall toward the office at the back of the house. The door was closed but as I approached, it opened and Marco popped his head out.
He was alone in the room and gestured for me to step inside. Once the door was closed behind us, he pulled me into a hug. It was odd hugging a vampire. They were so cold it was like hugging a street lamp on a cold night. Not very comforting.
"How are you feeling?" Marco asked, guiding me to a squishy chair in front of his desk.
"I'm good, for now." I took the seat and Marco sat down in the chair next to me.
"I know that look," he said. "Isn't it someone else's turn to save the world? Haven't you done your part?"
I'd given Marco the cliffs-notes version of the rescue and the dragon rising when I returned before crashing last night. He'd immediately called for more security and suggested I stay safely locked in the house.
It was a nice idea, staying here cut off from the world, hoping the queen would ignore me, but if Quinn's words were true, I was already on borrowed time.
"Quinn says the dragon queen is going to come for all of us who were part of the ceremony," I said.
"Who is Quinn?" Marco asked.
"James's friend, she just came by for a visit," I said.
Marco lifted his eyebrows. He had the expression I could imagine a father having when they were trying to avoid saying anything negative about their daughter's new boyfriend. The whole thing had to be a challenge for Marco. He was used to solving problems quickly and efficiently. Things didn't drag out when the vampires wanted them taken care of.
